Stormwater - Here We Come!

Hello Stormwater Warriors!

We are excited to launch this blog which will communicate the progress of our new Long Island Sound Future Fund (LISFF) grant, Demonstrating Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI) at Two Connecticut Colleges. This year we are working with Naugatuck Valley Community College in Waterbury and Three Rivers Community College in Norwich.

We are in our third year of funding with LISFF and this is truly a collaborative project working with students, faculty, and local experts to install GSI features. We are proposing the capture and infiltration of over 180,000 gallons of stormwater runoff annually utilizing a variety of installations including rain gardens, meadows, and rain barrels.

At NVCC, we had planned on installing a 400 sq. ft. rain garden and a 400 sq. ft. meadow, however these features will end up being larger to make better use of the site. In addition, 3 rain barrels will be installed. These applications will work in conjunction to mitigate the rain and storm water that would ordinarily flood into storm drains, receive costly treatments for contaminants, and discharged into a waterway. Similarly, we will be installing a 900 sq. ft. rain garden at TRCC where a large sloping parking area produces significant sheets flows of rain water.  The aim is to capture and infiltrate the water before it enters the lowest point of the flood plain.

In addition to stormwater infiltration, we have committed to educating over 100 students from NVCC and TRCC in GSI techniques. Many of these students will plan and install these projects. Furthermore, over 9,600 individuals will be reached thorough social media communications, newsletters, and educational signage at TRCC and NVCC.

Please check in on this blog frequently! We'll be updating our progress with helpful information on GSI throughout the coming months!
